If you're seeking a getaway from the busy streets of Seattle, a day trip to Olympic National Park is the adventure you need. Boasting lush rainforests, rugged coastlines, and breathtaking mountain views, this national park offers a beautiful variety of landscapes that are perfect for photography and hiking. In this blog post, we’ll showcase some must-see spots, including the fascinating Hoh Rainforest, the awe-inspiring Rialto Beach, and the tranquil Lake Crescent.
Getting to Olympic National Park
The trip from Seattle to Olympic National Park takes about four hours by car, though travel time can vary based on traffic and your chosen route. A popular option is to take the Edmonds ferry to Kingston, which provides a picturesque addition to your journey. Upon arriving on the Olympic Peninsula, the park’s natural beauty will welcome you immediately.
Remember to have your camera ready, as the views you'll encounter along the way are as stunning as the destinations themselves. For instance, the ferry ride offers scenic vistas of the Puget Sound and the majestic Olympic Mountains in the distance.
We did this trip in one day… which was a commitment to a lot of time in the car (4 hours there and 4 hours back) but would definitely recommend doing this over a weekend if you can!
Exploring the Hoh Rainforest
One of the top highlights of Olympic National Park is the Hoh Rainforest, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, you will find towering trees, vibrant moss, and lush greenery, creating a mystical atmosphere that feels like stepping into a storybook.

Easy Hikes in the Hoh Rainforest
For those looking to enjoy the beauty of the rainforest without the challenge of strenuous trails, several easy hiking options are available.
Hoh Rain Forest Trail: This 1.2-mile loop is ideal for families and casual hikers. As you wander through the heart of the rainforest, keep your camera ready for some amazing shots—especially when sunlight peaks through the tall trees.
Spruce Nature Trail: Another 1.2-mile loop, this trail is perfect if you want a deeper understanding of the rainforest's ecosystem. Along the way, interpretive signs provide insights into the unique plants and animals that call the rainforest home.
Hoh River Trail: If you’re up for a longer trek, the initial 5 miles of the Hoh River Trail is mostly flat, offering wonderful views of the river and surrounding forest. This section of the trail lets you fully immerse yourself in the rainforest's beauty while keeping the hike manageable.
Once you’ve finished exploring, take a moment to enjoy the tranquility of the Hoh Rainforest. The gentle sounds of wildlife and rustling leaves form a calming backdrop for your adventure.
Visiting Rialto Beach
After a refreshing experience in the rainforest, stop in Forks for some snacks and head over to Rialto Beach, located along the Pacific Coast. This rugged beach is famous for its towering sea stacks and awe-inspiring ocean views.

Photography Opportunities at Rialto Beach
Rialto Beach presents countless photography possibilities. The dramatic contrast of dark sand, crashing waves, and majestic rock formations creates a striking landscape.
Photography: There are so many neat driftwood pieces and scenic spots along the coast to capture both portraits or landscape type photography.
Exploring the Tide Pools: Visit during low tide to uncover the hidden world of marine life in the tide pools. Capture vibrant starfish, colorful anemones, and other fascinating sea creatures with your camera.
Hiking to Hole-in-the-Wall: If you're feeling adventurous, consider hiking the 4-mile round trip to Hole-in-the-Wall. This natural rock arch provides a fantastic backdrop for photographs, and the beachfront offers plenty of chances to capture striking images along the way.
Discovering Lake Crescent
After an exciting day of hiking and exploring the beach, make your way to Lake Crescent, a breathtaking glacial lake surrounded by majestic mountains. The deep blue waters paired with lush forests create an idyllic spot for relaxation and photography.

Activities at Lake Crescent
Easy Hikes: Don't miss the Marymere Falls Trail, a 1.5-mile round trip that leads to a stunning waterfall amidst old-growth forest. This well-maintained path is welcoming for all skill levels and great for families.
Photography: The views at Lake Crescent are simply stunning. Capture reflections of the surrounding mountains in the still waters and take shots of the beautiful wildflowers that bloom along the shore—these scenes will amaze you.
